Es scheint im Norden mittlerweile mangels Phonemstatus eine wilde Allophonie zu herrschen. Also geht auch „habe die Ähre“ oder „Urlaub am Mähr“. Früher war das eindeutiger: „das Meedchen treegt den Keese nach Deenemark“, und nicht anders.

The practice follows from the circumstance that we cannot perceive short individual segments well in isolation. Adding a neutral vowel is a good idea because segments, especially approximants, are strongly shaped by their context, so using a different vowel could be misleading.
