For all you Selmayr-obsessers out there: a reply to an access to documents request confirms that Selmayr met with the Kallas cabinet last month. However, apparently no minutes were made of the meeting, so the content of discussions are not written down. www.asktheeu.org/request/eeas...

And while the @europarl.europa.eu had issued a tough talk warning they could sue the Commission if nothing improved by 1 December 2024 - not much has happened since.

No comment from @socialistsanddemocrats.eu MEP López Aguilar who had drafted the resolution, or the Parliament spokespeople.

I won't deny Selmayr had a lot of influence and agree he is a controversial figure. But this article contains a lot of unquantified subjective adjectives, and neglects to mention that it was in fact POLITICO that was among the first, maybe even the first, to spread his "Monster" nickname since 2016.

GW Cross Media, now owned by Visma, built a near-monopoly by archiving Dutch government websites.

In 2018, it tried to expand in Europe, but when it came time to deliver, it ran head-first into the strict, no-nonsense oversight of the Publications Office of the EU.

The @ombudsman.europa.eu opa.eu today sent me its decision following a complaint I made about the way @ec.europa.eu handled my request for a letter from concerned civil servants about @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu's Israel policy.

The conclusion: maladministration.

The NGO @theicct.org hired a design studio in India to create a graphic novel about #Dieselgate. I won't say the illustrators are the next Jack Kirby or Fiona Staples, but the comic book is an accessible way to learn more about one of Europe's biggest corporate scandals. theicct.org/wp-content/u...

€82,80 - 5% = €78,67.
September 17, 2025 at 8:38 AM

It didn't fit in the newsletter, but I also asked the @socialistsanddemocrats.eu what amendments they would have introduced to the SAFE regulation, if the European Parliament had been involved.

MEP @repasi.bsky.social provided this quote.

Von der Leyen says "informed citizens who can trust what they read and hear are essential to keep those-in-power accountable", and that the press should remain free.

You know what would help?

A Commission that actually answers questions (on-record) and handles access to documents requests quicker.

The European Commission today published the tentative allocation of the 150 billion euro from the defence fund SAFE, which will be borrowed on the financial markets.

Poland has been allocated the most, followed by Romania. Then a shared third place for France and Hungary.

All of you waiting to read whether special adviser Juncker has been working on five-year contracts (which is what the Commission has previously said publicly but is against the rules) or on two-year contracts (which they’ve started saying since I asked questions) - please be patient.

On Monday @alistairkeepe.bsky.social asked why Commission President’s Signal messages were auto-deleted. Part of the answer: to save space.

On Tuesday @alexfanta.bsky.social followed up: von der Leyen has a smartphone with lots of storage, so what gives?

The question was skillfully sidestepped.
September 2, 2025 at 1:27 PM
A European Commission spokeswoman said today, in 2025, that the automatic deletion of Signal messages is turned on "to save space".

I asked the Commission to reveal the documents that showed former European Parliament secretary-general Klaus Welle had the qualifications to become a special adviser on defence affairs.

Let's just say they did not use a lot of space to list his expertise & experience...

When I asked the Commission how Juncker could have a five-year contract as special adviser (when the rules impose a two-year term limit) the Commission first quietly changed its website, and then told me the Juncker had always been working under two-year contracts. www.ftm.eu/articles/jun...

Kazakhstan has suggested that in a meeting in 2021 former EU chief Juncker offered his help on trade matters. Juncker denies doing so, but did not keep any minutes.

Let the press be free, but let's also:

- reply "on background" even when they ask for an on-the-record comment;

- take 122 working days (instead of the maximum 30) before replying to document requests;

- refuse access and hope they don't appeal;

- redact minutes that *are already public*.
