Good one, Max. The funding scheme is a bit different in CA, where lots of poor families live in rich districts. We equalized across districts, but we equalized down. That suited districts with lots of wealthy families. They raise money privately, have more discretion, and still outspend.

The most important piece about Salazar's death and its aftermath was Hunter S. Thompson's "Strange Rumblings in Aztlan." It was commissioned by Warren Hinckle at Scanlan's but ran in Rolling Stone. Oscar Acosta, who drew Thompson to LA, later accompanied him to Las Vegas. (That's another story.)
