It’s not easy. Gave it a go.
I’ve ended up with a lot of fours.
Would probably do some eight letter clues in those!

Squee! Been a good while since I’ve bought a hardback on day of release.
I’ve read everything again in anticipation (what a joy!). Can’t wait to see how it ends…

What a lovely time this afternoon at The Holloway in Norwich running a Cryptic Crosswords for Beginners session. Lovely people came. We solved clues and drank tea.

Will definitely do this again!

Great venue. If you’re about in Norwich it’s on St Benedict’s St

Still here for a couple of hours yet, but here’s the solution.

1. WENT
2. FINAL
3. GAINED

Which entered into what3words will take you to the Winter Gardens, Blackpool where our son has been competing this weekend.

Well we WENT, but no FINAL was GAINED. Good time had by all though!!

Fun. Couldn’t believe there was an oilfish though. Is three easier or harder? Not sure!

Lovely time training at UCL this week :) never actually made it to the famous quad before. Also saw Jeremy Bentham-bot through the window.

Can a large language model solve crosswords?

It might have helped the LLM solve the clue in Fig 1 if it was fairly written!

Here’s the paper, in fairness to the authors they’ve used a dataset of Guardian & Times clues

FB memory provided this gem about my home town from Paul in the Guardian in 2017. Clearly he has visited…

It was wonderful. There was also a surprise set with just two of them on the piano stage, which was just an old upright on a palette. Someone got engaged during Book of Love

Not sure that’s what it’s called.

I was outside the amazingly named John Doe of Diss in South Norfolk. Disappointingly, John’s wife’s name is Angela not Jane.

1. TOWEL
2. THRASHED
3. PROPOSALS

Putting that into what3words provides the answer.

Pretty sure I’ve seen “Norfolk town” for DISS in a couple of cryptics.

Hopefully not the same one as Marlow Murder Club 🤦‍♂️

I am looking forward to the new BBC drama Ludwig. But this image tickled me.

Setters… do you work like this? If not, what is your setting practice?

Annual visit to Houghton Hall in Norfolk. This year featuring 100 Gormley statues, all at exactly the same height above sea level and therefore many different plinths and holes required. Excellent. On until the end of October.

Really pleased with the enthusiastic responses to my puzzle in the Independent yesterday. Thanks to Duncan for his review on 15 squared and the commenters too. Most encouraging.

In celebration, here’s a pic of me which bears some thematic relation.
