Sorry to hear Will, and thank you for sharing. My mum’s also ill and I’m dreading the day I will be where you are now. Stay strong and find the joy where you can.

Have you noticed any quality-of-life improvements? Less stressed, more shiny?

Ran into a bit of a hurdle. It seems bookshop.org is not the place to find ebooks, at least not right now. I hope they expand to include ebooks soon. For now, I'll try out Kobo's store. Wind and Truth, here we go!

Thanks! I’ll check it out!

Thanks for the tip! Sounds a bit like bookshop.org but for audio books.

The UI and branding alone makes it feel like a step up from Goodreads. Time will tell how it compares in practice.

That's it for now. As I go further down this rabbit hole, I will likely realize how tied up I am with products and services controlled by billionaires and oligarchs. It might become impossible to get out from their influence, but damn if I won't give it a try.

That leaves What's App, Oculus, Giphy and Threads in the Meta family, and I don't use any of them at this point. What's App can be replaced with Signal, and Threads with Bluesky. I'll just avoid Oculus and Giphy. I look forward to saying goodbye to Meta!

I'm torn about Instagram. At its best, it's been a great way to keep in touch and share with the important people in your life. At its worst, it's a bottomless black hole of despair. There are a few good options, but you could use Signal or Blue Sky to share images or short-form videos.

In terms of valid replacements for Facebook and Messenger, I'm currently looking to @bsky.app (for social) and Signal (for chats). However, only a fraction of my friends use those services right now. I'll try to move the most important group chats over to Signal in the near future.
