Assembly no doubt. The design seems to be based on “V1” from web.archive.org/web/20121011... , but with only one “shade” bit. Code from that site looks like a great starting point.

It arrived! Sanded off chip is Atmega48PA with lockbits set (of course..). VGA is generated with a 2-bit R2R DAC for each color plus what looks like an “intensity” bit that’s shared by all 3 colors. Basically it can do 64 colors and two intensities. Custom FW looks doable.
