Yes I suspect you're right and that we're pretty aligned on this. Maybe just a slight difference in emphasis; I'm more interested in how the work updates our theories/knowledge than in how the problem was approached exactly. Though I do also enjoy the latter when done well!

There are so many studies out there, I want some synthesis.

I disagree. I want to hear a narrative that ties a body of work together, the big picture. For the details I go to the papers. Of course it's all relative, I still want to know what the experimental design was, but in a talk I don't need to hear the details of feature selection or statistical tests.
