Irishman in London.
Was is Watson’s racism reported passively?

In 2007, he had said some anti-Semitism was justified

“Just like some anti-Irish feeling is justified. If you can’t be criticized, that’s very dangerous. You lose the concept of a free society.”

Nah, mate. You really wouldn’t

Really interesting piece in Weekend FT on rise of Catholic right (something I’ve been following for a while)

But shame to see ‘Leonard Leo’ misnamed as ‘Leo Leonard’…

At a really important discussion on how the law is being used to attack journalists - including in the U.K.

Hard to argue with the message on the bottom of this bus, in Westminster 😬

About to speak about how billionaires are buying democracy at the fantastic Zeg story telling festival at Finsbury town hall with @oliverbullough.bsky.social and @suehawley.bsky.social 😊

If Robert Jenrick thinks the story of 1980s football hooliganism is ‘The police put a quick but firm end to it’, I’ve a big bag of magic beans that he’s gonna *love*

This is a very good - if very lugubrious - read

Pithy, acutely observed and unstinting in showing how liberal democracies are being pushed aside by strongmen - and how ineffective, and divided are the politicians supposed to protect them

How it’s going…

The commentator also sounds like Alan Partridge, for some reason

This is so going to be the worst £2.49 I’ve ever spent

At the launch of the Nerve with @carolecadwalla.bsky.social @carolvorders.bsky.social et al in Liverpool.

Great to see a panel set below a quote from Gaston Bachelard (the Poetics of Space is *amazing*)

Really chuffed to be name checked by @carolvorders.bsky.social on Labour Party fringe session on independent media with @carolecadwalla.bsky.social

Populist movements across West are being driven by groups of people who don't all believe the same thing - but all share a huge distrust of institutions, fed by social media's algorithms

The view this morning.

Hate can be defeated, by ordinary, decent people.

But it also needs political leadership standing up to it. Which Britain doesn’t seem to have right now

Today people went around my neighborhood in north east London spray painting St George’s crosses onto people’s homes. Many of these houses have non British people living in them.

This is getting very dark, very quick.

I’ll always remember very gently ribbing him about being north London liberal elite at a book festival in ireland. He had a wicked sense of humour and was great company

(I’m going to miss him, a lot. We were due to be having our regular lunch on Monday)

I’ll always remember the session I did with Conor at Granard booktown festival earlier this year.

He was in his element. On home turf. Talking about the law, and human rights, and why democracy matters.

But also having a great laugh, at the world and himself.

A real class act

APPGs are meant to be informal parliamentary groups.

But this one sold corporate sponsors “networking opportunities with MPs and policymakers” — with senior ministers attending events and Labour MPs tabling dozens of parliamentary questions backing defence industry interests.

Andrea Jenkyns has just suggested that in power Reform would bring in legislation to *ban* public sector workers striking.

At Institute for Government in London for an event on the Freedom of Information Act at 25.

My Democracy for Sale colleague @jennacorderoy.bsky.social rightly stressing that FOI responses are at an all time low.

So much prevarication from government departments in particular
