A delightful but poignant find in a second-hand copy of Ulysses that bought this weekend. I doubt that someone today would think that they could ‘make their life useful again’ after a divorce by getting more involved in politics.

It’s not the same Q but I did some research on personality types and political ambition and there are some small differences in terms of the Big Five traits and having considered running for office (tiny.cc/73od001).

My new book HOW TO THINK ABOUT POLITICS: A GUIDE IN FIVE PARTS will be published by OUP next month in paperback and ebook. I argue that to understand politics, we must look past the daily fluctuations and instead focus on the fundamental constants of political life. Preview here — shorturl.at/mqLRt

And 3. an audiobook (series) — Slow Horses (2010 by Mick Herron). Downloaded the first in the series based on a newsletter recommendation from @stephenkb.bsky.social and promptly blasted through the lot. Funny and acerbic state-of-the-nation spy novels.

2. A book (series) — Wolf Hall (2009 by Hilary Mantel). I can’t believe I hadn’t got around to these earlier. So, so good and full of insight into the workings of power and politics.

In the spirit of positivity filling this increasingly busy place, I thought I’d recommend some things I’ve enjoyed recently:
1. A film — La chimera (2023, dir. Alice Rohrwacher, on MUBI). A thoughtful drama about robbing tombs that was continually surprising and has stuck with me since watching.
