Wow Rohan. Thanks. As a boyhood 70s fan who never moved beyond that decade and still listens to 70s regularly, I can’t believe I’d forgotten that song. Ballroom Blitz✅, Fox On The Run✅, but that song had been erased and it’s as ‘good’ 😂 as their other stuff.

Just sporting events? Wipe it from the earth.

In saying that I’m sure you’ve defined momentum as team which has ‘scored most recently’.
I really think that footy people see momentum as controlling territory or possession or maybe clearance. (Sure, that might lead to ‘scoring most recently’ also.)
Aren’t we comparing different definitions?

This analogy was oblivious to the fact that oppositions change tactics to stop momentum/run on/repeat scoring/whatever which can’t be applied to a coin toss. Yes, teams try to stop [momentum] - insert own word in [ ]. Until that new word is applied, let’s call it momentum (or run on). No biggie!

We both know that when ‘momentum’ is used in sport, it describes a team which looks to be on top. AFLGlicko prefers the term ‘run on’ which seems reasonable.
In ‘Footballistics’ a chapter showed chance is stranger than reality in regard to repeat scoring. I think a coin toss analogy was used. …

Momentum is a word, just a word, which fans, coaches, commentators - all atheists - understand how it is applied in sport.
Meanwhile stats folk (gods) are constrained by literalness, oblivious to fact that sport is an art as much as a science.
Momentum Gods are a figment of stats folk imagination.😉

You think therefore you are. Maybe you just need a career change.

Transitioning now. Replacing X with Bluesky on the task bar was a pivotal moment. 🙂
