Getting a quick run around at Caulfield prior to Blue Diamond Stakes day. Track is in good order with tricky conditions forecast for tomorrow. Many thanks to Sam Bennetts, his staff and the MRC team

5/5: The Gold Rush

Somewhat of an anomaly in this list given the race has only been one of the crown jewels in the Pinnacles series since 2022. The capacity fields are seeing far more competitive race tempos, but the peak performance in the 1400m WFA event is still VEGA MAGIC in 2016.

4/5: Northerly Stakes

The 1800m start does lend itself to producing very high tempos, with runners drawn wide having to forge their way forward in to the bend. ARCADIA QUEEN's benchmark of -16.6 as a 3YO hasn't been in danger the last six seasons, the race generally below the previous standard.

3/5: Winterbottom Stakes

A generally consistent set of performances, clearly dominated by eastern states raiders. OVERPASS winning the last two editions, plus two editions of the Quokka, and curiously, posted the same winning figure of -8.3 in the first marsupial race as the 2024 Winterbottom.

2/5: Railway Stakes

Perhaps WA was lucky with a series of high quality locals (typically for Bob Peters) dominating the G1 race over the last ten years, capitalising on fast tempo races. Despite the relatively genuine tempos of the last four years, the benchmark has dropped to some degree.

1/5: WA Guineas

Something of a trend came to a halt this year, the previous five years before 2024 producing at best an even tempo. Despite the speed, STORYVILLE produces a figure well below that of previous winners, including star mare ARCADIA QUEEN and VARIATION.
