These comments make a lot of heteronormative assumptions, such as presupposing cishet identity. What if he's gay and accidentally calls a male judge honey? Or if I called any judge honey? I think we all agree that misogyny is real and rampant, but we have to check our own implicit biases too.

No, but if he was married to a man and confused a male judge for his husband, we wouldn't instantly assume it was sexist, even though it's the same offense.

Fellow millennial. Town between:
"Them's the breaks"
"Peace out" or
"FML"
But I'll probably just go with:
"Finally free from my student loans"

I do have extensive experience in that arena, as a young(ish) female lawyer in a very red state, and I agree with you. There was a litigant who kept calling the female judge "honey" on one of my cases and it was condescending and misogynistic. This didn't seem like that at all. Plus he's mortified.

Thank goodness my go-to response in that situation is just to stammer unintelligibly for a beat or two. It's not great, but it rarely runs the risk of getting me in this kind of trouble.

I was on the phone with a judge for a scheduling change and nearly said "K love you, bye" at the end of the call. I saved it somehow but it was precariously close. I think it was, "K, lo...ng day...today, huh?" or someone like that .
