It was part general China tariffs but an awful lot steel and aluminium tariffs.
US CPI index for Laundry Appliances from 2012 to 2020. The line is sloping steadily down until a sudden jump in 2018 ... = tariffs

It was even sillier than you think. The bureaucracy was so unprepared for the idiocy of the tariffs that you had an backlog of 16,000 exemption requests at the Bureau of Commerce and crazy things like this :

Elon Musk: “Bluecry *laughing emoji * Aka Pedosky” This is presumably because Bluesky have publicly talked about the challenge of suddenly having 23mn accounts and moderation, and discussed how they’re facing the challenge with so few staff. Musk OTOH basically just quit all attempts at moderation because something something elementary AI something and so now Twitter smells like a septic tank of abuse, troll sweat, and sexual exploitation and still has 3000 employees, 2990 of whom are desperately trying to clean up his messes. Legal dept goes brrrrrrrrrrr
