Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said during a news conference last week that Aguilar had initially been charged with second-degree murder as that was the charge Phoenix police recommended, but said prosecutors could seek different and additional charges saying "nothing's off the table."

Aguilar is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. It's not immediately clear which jail in which he's incarcerated. Juveniles age 15 and older who are charged with murder are required under Arizona law to be charged as adults. His next hearing is on Aug. 26.

The documents say Aguilar talked about murdering 16-year-old Michael Montoya II and claimed Montoya stole a firearm from him. A girl told police that Aguilar, who normally sat behind her, sat next to Montoya instead and punched him before stabbing him three times.

It doesn't immediatlely seem to me that the suspect brandished a firearm that would consequently prompt a lethal response from police.

It's hard to tell whether the suspect was armed based on the snippets of body-camera footage released relating to this incident. Surveillance footage shows a man running into to a convenience store and saying another driver is armed but footage itself doesn't corroborate that.

The dog lived, the suspect did not.

The story I believe you're referencing involved someone who police said was armed when an officer shot them. Another officer lifted a K-9 unit into the car shortly beforehand and the officer who fired their weapon struck both the dog and the suspect.

I get the desire to highlight exclusive access but there are so many other ways you could have done that without being objectively wrong
