Old Barn’s Orient Express Is a Clue-ful Poirot Treat
Review: Murder on the Orient Express at Theatre Charlotte By Perry Tannenbaum We can thank the Brits for the notion that passenger trains should run with absolute timeliness and precision. Now that Ken Ludwig’s meticulous adaptation has opened at the Queens Road Barn, we can also thank Agatha Christie, Britain’s most avidly read mystery writer, for her Murder on the Orient Express…

Listen! Charlotte Symphony Has Launched Its 94th Season With a Truly Musical Logo
Review: Charlotte Symphony Plays Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 By Perry Tannenbaum October 10, 2025, Charlotte, NC - It’s a bit of a mind-bending concept, so after launching Charlotte Symphony’s 94th season by leading his orchestra and audience in the National Anthem, music director Kwamé Ryan needed to take a couple of minutes to explain what exactly a musical logo is. Symphony also has a new conventional logo, a graphic see-through C with a top seraph that reminds one of a bass clef.

Charlotte Ballet’s Whispers, Echoes, Voices Is Excitingly Sensual, Primal, and Imaginative

Charlotte Ballet’s Whispers, Echoes, Voices Is Excitingly Sensual, Primal, and Imaginative
Review: Whispers, Echoes, Voices at Knight Theater By Perry Tannenbaum October 30, 2025, Charlotte, NC - Over and over again, as I drove home after opening night of Charlotte Ballet’s Whispers, Echoes, Voices – capped by the world premiere of resident choreographer Mthuthuzeli November’s As I Am, I found myself asking, “What Did I Just See?” That is not an unusual question for me to ask after a stellar evening of modern dance, for the art is usually abstract and chameleonic in the extreme, but on the eve of Halloween, the urgency of the question felt compounded.

Vox Populi Deafeningly Lauds Little Shop at The Barn
Review: Little Shop of Horrors at Theatre Charlotte By Perry Tannenbaum Sunny, frolicsome, dark, and bizarre: it’s tough to say whether the best landing spot for Little Shop of Horrors is during the spring, that fragrant time of flowering hope and romance, or the fall, that decaying season of colorful rot and the macabre. All of the Metrolina theatre companies and colleges that have taken us back to Skid Row this century have chosen one of those two seasons for reprising Howard Ashman’s 1982 adaptation of Roger Corman’s cult comedy flick.

Raisin Remains an Aspirational Reminder
Review: A Raisin in the Sun at Theatre Charlotte By Perry Tannenbaum Did somebody just say something about FREE SPEECH?? Yeah, about a billion times per second if you’re tracking social media, college campuses, nation’s capitals, and late night TV. Still no theatre critic we know would dare suggest in today’s torrid media climate that the subject generates too much heat and too little light – or that babble about free speech serves as a black hole for time and breath better spent discussing other freedoms.

Three Women Empathize Historically With Stabat Mater on a Historic Night
Review: Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater at The Mint Museum September 11, 2025, Charlotte, NC - With its stained-glass windows, high ceiling, and resonant wooden flooring, the Uptown Mint Museum proved to be an unexpectedly apt venue for Opera Carolina and Charlotte Symphony to join in commemorating mournful, horrific events with sacred music. Reflexively, we look to the past – and to religion – to express our feelings amid present woes, but neither of the musical organizations could have anticipated the extra layers of calamity earlier in the week that would pile onto their memorial to the victims and heroes of 9/11 on its 24th anniversary.
