I constantly feel like the big AI grouch at work (and outside of it), but really: we need to remember (and remember, and remember) the value of our own brains. So here's another reminder! Writing is a beautiful and useful thing. Let's keep practising it, at all scales.

Hugely entertaining piece for anyone (biologist or not) who's ever watched a film and in frustration/fascination thought, "WHY did they choose to use THAT specific species there??".

Two thoughts on this Trans Day of Visibility:

1. Trans people are just ordinary people. We have jobs & families. We are trying to pursue happiness like everyone else.

2. Almost everything you "know" about trans people has filtered thru an insanely well-funded scapegoating media machine*.

I love the crazy names given to moths. A favourite is the day-flying moth Mother Shipton. Named after an infamous Yorkshire witch, if you look hard enough at the wing pattern you can make out the profile of an ugly old face. I found this one in the Yorkshire Wolds.

Wow. Maybe a first for (very unrealistic) gen-AI image on the cover of a leading Ecology journal? This seems like the sort of thing that might be considered harmless fun, but what about the optics/ethics of promoting and normalising use of this problematic tech in scholarly publishing? #academicsky

Science takes time - a lot of time. Time that is more and more difficult to make available because of increased workloads. Time that exceeds the temporary contracts of postdocs and PhDs.

I'll illustrate this using our paper published in Nature yesterday. 🧵 (1/x)
