Throw in ICE stalking ERs and undocumented folks ARE effectively unable to receive medical help in the US. Why do you should anyone be required to pay out of pocket for healthcare AT ALL, when the the worlds advanced countries don’t have that requirement, spend less, and have better outcomes?

“Emergency services” as required by EMTALA are pretty narrowly defined. Regardless, most people don’t even know if it’s existence and the fact that one can still expect a bill for those services is enough to put people off from visiting a hospital.

That’s plainly not true. Emergency services are not allowed to be denied due to an inability to pay. Those people still receive a bill for services rendered and are expected to pay for them.
