“Well, you’ll have a week to think about it. You’re not going out again,” his mother said. She stood up. “I’m really disappointed that you chose to do this, on the first day of school, even. I don’t know what got into you.” “Sorry, Mom,” “Charlie” said. “Now come on. I’ve got dinner for us,” his mother said, and she left the room. “Charlie” finished up a note he was making in her journal about what it had felt like to kiss Asher for the first time (“amazing, ten stars, would do so again,”) and put it back in the box to the side of the bed, sliding it back underneath. She may be punished, but they couldn’t stop her from seeing Asher at school, right? There was no physical way to do that, so everything would be all right.

It was a quiet and somber mood at Chloe’s apartment. Emily and Asher had spent quite a few hours at the hospital, consoling Emily’s Dad and allowing her the time she needed with her mom. Now they were back, and Emily was not feeling it. She was at the kitchen table, with one of Chloe’s brews beside her, steaming, the tea chain sprawled out across the table. She just sat pondering, letting the steam build up a wall between herself and the world. Across the table from her, and holding her hand, was Asher. She was letting Emily have the time she needed; she was within Emily’s grasp, and she could still scroll on her phone while they…waited? Asher wasn’t sure exactly what it was they were doing right now. But she knew that the important thing was to let Emily have a moment to process everything. Emily had changed again, out of the jeans and t-shirt and into a skirt and blouse - clothes that were more her style. She sat with one leg over the other, kicking the free leg every so often in beat with a rhythm that Asher couldn’t hear. The mood was somber.

“Uh huh, okay,” she muttered to herself as she consulted the book, “eye of newt, tongue of frog, dead man’s dirt…” she trailed as she waved and wiggled her fingers. Jars from around her floated into the air, and orbited her as she read. One by one she seized a jar, pinched an ingredient or two, and then let it go to float back to its place on the shelf. She kept muttering to herself as she did this, little reminders of what she was doing. Ruby looked on, half-curious, still half-engaged with her phone. The liquid in the pot went from green to pink as she continued to add ingredients to the mix. Finally, the liquid in the cauldron settled, no longer bubbling, just steaming, simmering. Theodora’s sensitive nose detected that this was it: her concoction had reached its final stage.

They started in on the piles. Each individual one took about forty-five minutes to sort through, figure out, and determine. They laughed as they found a piece of something intimate, or aw’d over something cute, or the like. Eventually they got everything sorted out into three piles sitting on the freshly made bed, ready to be gone through for cleanliness and desirability. The books were left out of the bed piles, stacked neatly on the floor where they could be gone through at a later time. They were also on their second round of wine, and feeling it pretty well. They were at ease, relaxed, and comfortable with each other. Which meant that in-between sorting things, they were getting pretty handsy with each other as well.

Together they walked up to the closed door, hand in hand. Welle reached forward and turned the doorknob, opening the room to Isabelle’s sight… And what she saw made her giggle. If the rest of Welle’s apartment was well maintained and put together, her room wasn’t. Everything was on the floor - everything. Clothes, books, makeup, shoes, etc, all of it piled up in various piles around the room, contrasted to the whiteness of the carpet. The bed was unmade. The vanity mirror had handprints, dust, and streaks on it (worse than the bathroom mirror did). The makeup…best not to get into it. Welle walked past Isabelle, her face red, but this time not because of romantic feelings, but because she was absolutely mortified at the state of things. She babbled, trying to get a grasp of the words that would help explain the situation, but unable to fit her mouth around them.

Welle blushed. “I guess.” A sudden shiver went through Isabelle at that, but she couldn’t bring herself to admit that it was because the blush was cute. Instead, she grabbed the sides of her jacket and squeezed. “Wow. It’s, um, getting cold out here.” “Would a coffee warm you up?” The offer was very tempting. Isabelle bit down on her lip. She wanted to - “…yes.” Welle smiled. “C’mon. I know a great place. And it’s right by the ocean.”

The woman she’d bumped into was middle aged, wearing a dark gray pea coat and slacks. Slacks that were now soaked with coffee. “Watch where you’re going!” the woman said, before she shot Isabelle a look that went from annoyed to…curious? To Isabelle’s surprise, the woman blessed herself. “Miss, I’m sorry to see this. You’re a young girl, and need no trouble.” “Excuse me?” Isabelle asked. The woman shook her head. “You’re under a powerful curse! God watch over you!" So saying, the woman, still eyeing her up, left the coffee shop, muttering to herself. Isabelle watched her go, curious as to what that was about. She paid for her drink, and left the coffee shop, feeling slightly weirded out by the whole episode.

Forty-five minutes later, Isabelle was sitting on the train platform, waiting for Welle to arrive. Her nose was buried in Ondine, slowly digesting it as she paged. She’d decided to take Rose’s suggestion and tackle this one first, to get her ready to tackle the monstrosity that was the Ring Cycle. A bell started clanging nearby; Isabelle looked up from her book and noticed the train approaching the station, steam hissing out from its sides. She lowered her book to her lap and watched as the train slowed to a stop. When it did, people started streaming out, led by the conductor stepping out to check his pocket watch. Isabelle gathered her things together as she waited for Welle. Welle emerged from the middle of the exiting crowd, looking around. When they locked eyes, she smiled and waved, pushing her way through the evening mob to give her a hug.

“So where should we go?” Welle asked. The crowd had thinned past the bottleneck of the stairs; now they were in the parking lot, walking down the wide aisle towards the fences marking the boundary of the train station. They were heading towards Isabelle’s house; she could smell the salt air beckoning to her. “How about that new place up by the memorial? The Fisherman’s Bounty,” Isabelle suggested. “What day is it?” Welle suddenly asked, almost a little fearfully. “It’s Friday. You know that,” Isabelle laughed, looking over. They stopped just outside the fence, near the gate. Welle looked down, playing with her fingers. "I have to see my folks tomorrow."

Isabelle sighed as the waiter returned to her table. “Are we still waiting, miss? Perhaps some more water?” The polite-to-a-fault man asked. She’d previously given him the once over and determined that she didn’t like his attitude, nor the too-young-for-it mustache on his face. But as for his question: “No, no thank you. Just the check, please.” The waiter nodded and left her side.

Maybe it was time to fight fire with fire – more like, parent with parent. Isabelle’s mom was a pretty good resource for information and might have an idea what to do in their situation. Would she be up though? It wasn’t that late at night; being with Welle had made her a bit of an early sleeper, and her mom was usually up watching the late-night news at this time of night. Isabelle didn’t want to wake her father up, but that might just be a risk to take. She quietly went to the bedroom and retrieved her cell phone, careful not to wake the sleeper. In the dim duskiness of the living room, she pulled up her mother’s contact information and hit “call”; the ringer went off a few times before finally, someone picked up:

Maybe it was maintenance, she thought as she crossed the room and went for the door. There was no way it was a noise complaint – they’d been asleep for hours now. And Welle hadn’t mentioned any packages due to the house… Finally at the door, Isabelle opened the door to the apartment, clutching her bathrobe closed, and asked, “yes?” A woman stood at the threshold, her hand raised back to knock on the door again. She resembled Welle in that she had long brunette hair past her shoulders, piercing blue eyes, and a sort of salt-air-smell to her, but outside of that, the two couldn’t be less similar. Welle was slim and petite; this woman was obviously older (around Isabelle’s mother’s age, she imagined), muscularly built, with high cheekbones.

“You know, I like to go for walks out there sometimes,” Welle said, not noticing that Isabelle had an eye on her. “Oh? Uh, yeah,” Isabelle said, returning to reality and taking a sip from her coffee. A small smile played on Welle’s lips. “Sometimes I see people swimming, late at night. Y’know, when they think no one’s watching.” Understanding caught Isabelle mid-sip; her eyes went wide. “You saw me?” she whispered, leaning forward. Welle giggled. “Yes. Are you embarrassed?”

“I think it’s time you left,” Isabelle said, stepping forward. Welle’s mother looked down at her with narrow eyes. “I think you need to stay out of her business,” the woman grumbled, and before Welle could shout a warning, she backhanded Isabelle across the face and sent her sprawling across the room. Isabelle got up from the pile she’d landed in and wiped her mouth with the back of her own hand. She wanted to get up, wanted to charge the woman fists flying, but that would be useless; even without the bum leg, it looked like she was aggressively outmatched. So she stayed on the ground and waited to see what would happen next.

Isabelle was starting to get annoyed by the off-handed way they kept referring to her, but for the moment chose not to make a big deal about it. Why would she tempt fate now? “I am a grown woman now, mom, and I’m not putting my life, my career, and my choice of lovers, to risk because you and Dad got a bug up your ass about going back to the old life,” Welle said. “The old life?” Isabelle repeated, trying to force her way past the bodybuilder mother and into the center of the conversation. Welle took a sympathetic look at her. “Yes, the ‘old life’; the life of thievery they like to call their own,” she said, looking back to her mother, piercing blue eyes meeting blue eyes.
