Good morning! Nice to have a bank-holiday start to the week. I finished Olga Tokarczuk's The Empusium (translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones) yesterday evening - terrific, as expected. Today, I will be combining work and pleasure, editing a WIP by @muinbeoarchives.bsky.social.

It's #WorldPetryDay, so here is a poem with a splendid message from Stevie Smith.

Good morning to you! I hope that your week has got off to a good start. In between playing catch-up with outdoor tasks (courtesy of astounding & continuing lack of rain), I'm having my brain re-wired by @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social's Absolution.

Had to abandon bread-making to answer the door a short while ago: the postie delivering my prize! And not only did I get a splendid book of reproductions, it came with a covering letter incorporating an exclusive original artwork by @ianrpearsall.bsky.social 😁

Yes, definitely Monday, no escaping from it, sorry...
Just finished The Future of the 'Classical' by Salvatore Settis; just started Treatises on Dust by @timothyjjarvis.bsky.social (pub. @swanriverpress.bsky.social}. Under the Parthenon one minute, under a certain old street lamp the next.

You’ve been murdered, who do you want on the case?

But my haul was subsequently supplemented by a surprise Valentine's day present:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
But neither as good
As a book or two.

Up in town for a couple of days. primarily to go to the revived Trinity secondhand book sale at @tcddublin.bsky.social. Also @booksupstairs.bsky.social, where tea & cake was indulged in along with book-browsing. I was remarkably restrained, in the circs... 1//2

G'morning, & happy Monday! Reading nothing today to keep my brain free of distraction after a re-read of Powell's A Question of Upbringing for this evening's online #MusicOfTime book group hosted by @neglectedbooks.com. Like the sequence as a whole, a work that no amount of re-reading can exhaust.

The week hasn't started too badly - more Book Post arrived, so I'm now playing with the full deck of David Herter's First Republic trilogy. I will have to find a hardcover copy of On the Overgrown Path, for the sake of completeness: the revised edn, which I have, is only available as a kindle ebook🙁

Good morning! I hope you survived the storm unscathed. I'm reading Atmospheric Disturbances by @helengrantsays.bsky.social in hardback (from @swanriverpress.bsky.social) & Things We Found During the Autopsy by @kuzhalimanickavel.bsky.social on e-reader (from @blaft.bsky.social). Good stuff!

#BookPost! Much relieved as I ordered it direct from UK publisher & was resigned to the possibility that it might never actually arrive because Brexit. But no trouble at all. It has now itself disappeared from publisher's legacy books website, so I may even have snagged the last copy. 1/2 #Booksky

Good morning! In print, I am working - or should that be dreaming? - my way very slowly (it's that kind of book) through Pessoa's The Book of Disquiet; on the e-reader, I've got Reggie Oliver's The Dreams of Cardinal Vittorini and Other Strange Stories, from the reliably excellent Tartarus Press.
January 20, 2025 at 8:12 AM
Then it was over to @blaft.bsky.social for two books of short stories by @kuzhalimanickavel.bsky.social (Insects Are Just Like You and Me Except Some of Them Have Wings & Things We Found During the Autopsy) & a translation of a 1957 Urdu pulp thriller (Doctor Dread) by Ibne Safi. 2/3

It's my birthday today & since several lovely people have supplied cash/book tokens, I'm buying myself some ebook pressies. From Tartarus Press, two books of strange stories: The Dreams of Cardinal Vittorini by Reggie Oliver, & Herald of the Hidden by Mark Valentine. 📚 1/3

Was up in town, staying at the parental mansion, where I found under the Christmas tree a present left for me by a sibling. Yes, the Bibliothèque des Refusés book-present haul has acquired another gem from @swanriverpress.bsky.social! 📚🎄🎁

A very satisfying afternoon at the brilliant @sheelaghnagig.bsky.social #IndieBookshop, picking up pre-ordered books along with a couple that caught my fancy on the shelves. Won't post cover pics as some are presents, but 👇 is a selfie present. Hope you're a good loser @muinbeoarchives.bsky.social

Good morning! I hope the week has got off to a good beginning for you. I've just started Malarkoi by @alexpheby.bsky.social, and also have Ghostly Tales by J.S. Le Fanu on the e-reader.

He definitely qualifies as a national treasure. It is entirely fitting that he is probably the only head of state in the world to have had tea-cosies rather than statues made in his honour.

Some wonderful book post arrived today from @swanriverpress.bsky.social - an object of beauty and distinction, with or without its jacket.
