And any independent press who aren't owned by major corporations are afraid of getting sued for libel if they call out obvious lies. They may be right, and they may be able to prove it, but the legal fees will bury them.

And it doesn't help that the press have no spine, and anyone with any authority are basically complicit.

Some situations are harder to prove. Like we all know Bush was probably lying about Iraq having WMDs. But was he lying? Or was he acting on bad intel? RFK is lying about the Tylonol thing. But is he lying? Or did somebody slip him a bad study claiming it was real? And how do you prove that in court?

You have to prove not only that something they said was false, but that they knew it was false at the time, and weren't themselves mislead or mistaken. It's a difficult thing to prove in a legal sense. Especially when matters of "personal opinion" further muddy the waters.
