That is the Hull Rust Mahoning mine, largest open pit iron mine in the World. It's actually kind of beautiful... a mini-Grand Canyon, if you will. Many of the dormant iron mines on the Iron Range mostly fill with water making very deep lakes.

We've built our own up on MN's Iron Range...
