Avery starts walking past Alice. Avery: I...really should be going. Alice: Hey, wait! She starts to walk behind him. Alice: Did you see that flash of light? Avery turns. Avery: No... Alice and Avery are both walking, Avery is ahead and Alice is behind. Alice: It came from this direction...(gestures behind her) Alice: I need to know what caused it. Avery (hand pressed to his forehead): I'm sorry, I don't think I can help. My head's all foggy. Alice (thinking): I didn't just run into some junkie, did I? Great. New Normal part 1: prologue
The start of my webcomic. I'll be posting these under the tag #newnormalcomic
It’s a summer morning in 1986 in Freetown, MA, near the Freetown-Fall River State Forest. Alice, a young short-haired Filipina woman dressed in a red turtleneck, glasses, a jacket, and khakis, is having breakfast out in the woods. She boils some water on a camper stove to make coffee in a thermos. Her van is parked nearby. Alice looks around after sipping her coffee, looking tired. Just as she starts packing up, she notices a sudden bright flash of light through the trees. Birds fly off from where the light has originated. Alice stares in awe for a second before running towards where she saw this with a camera in hand. Alice: Come on, come on! Alice comes across Avery, a pale, dishevelled-looking young man in a hoodie and shorts, laying unconscious on the forest floor. Mushrooms and ferns can be seen near him, and he has a messenger bag.

Ref sheets for the main characters in my current passion project, New Normal! It's a comic set in 1986 Massachusetts about queer paranormal investigators.
A sketchbook page with character art and post-it notes with the following info: Alice Sanchez. 21, she/her, Filipino-American, 5 foot 7. Born August 26th, 1965. Alice is a freelance paranormal investigator living out on the road. She hasn't had much luck finding genuine cases...until recently. Additional details listed (point form): She is lesbian, autistic, has a special interest in the supernatural, left-handed, slow to trust others, has deadpan humour and swears a lot. Main drawing: A butch woman with dark tan skin, short brown hair. She is wearing glasses, a turtleneck, khakis and sneakers. Two additional sketches are on the page, one of her taking notes with a stoic face, and the other of her stimming excitedly by shaking her arms. These sketches are annotated "Neutral expression most of the time...but gets really excited about new discoveries!" A sketchbook page with character art and post-it notes with the following info: Avery O'Sullivan. 18, he/him, Irish-American, 5 foot 1. Born June 22nd, 1958. Avery had been missing since 1976. He was found 10 years later, but hadn't aged, nor did he perceive those years to have passed. Additional details listed: He is gay, trans, and asexual, and has ADHD. His favourite food is donuts, he's ambidextrous, a bit of a hippie, and loves nature. Main drawing: A small young man with pale skin, slightly baggy eyes, and dark, disheveled hair. There is a sketch that shows him laughing, another that shows him nervously pulling a hood over his head, and one that shows the Claddagh ring on his right hand. It is on his middle finger, with the heart design pointed outwards. A sketchbook page with character art and post-it notes with the following info: William James Johnson. 46 (at time of death), he/him, American, 6 foot 2. Born February 29th, 1940. Will was a regular accountant who died to accidental choking. He now haunts his own house, but tends to forget he's dead. Additional details listed: He is a cishet ally, he acts a bit like an old cartoon character, is right-handed, has a sweet tooth, and always wanted to settle down and have kids. Main drawing: A lanky man, coloured completely pale blue and able to levitate. He wears wireframe glasses and an office uniform, comprised of a button-down shirt, a tie, slacks and dress shoes. Beside his main drawing is a sketch of him sitting inside a kerosene lantern, annotated "[spiritually] possesses this special lantern he owned". Another sketch depicts him looking nervous as his form becomes more liquid-like, and is annotated "'Condenses' when feeling strong emotions." In the same sketch, his glassed also appear slightly cracked.
