I watched the pilot years ago, didn't enjoy it, and that's it. The tendency to make Anti-whateverism a personal online identity is deeply concerning. It's like an anti-fandom. Fandom is messy enough as is. Uniting in hating something is...deeply uncomfortable.

Part of it is a general reevaluation after years of MCU slop, part of it is people who grew up with the Pirates trilogy and Rango.

Like, I genuinely didn't know people hated his Pirates sequels at the time, I always loved them.

Self-awareness isn't exactly a trait of people who value internet clout over going outside and touching grass.

Also surprised you didn't make note of this, but a lot of those themes you identified in YYH are also heavily present in HxH and given a much better exploration. The Chimera Ant arc is essentially a do-over in some ways of YYH's final arc.

A lot of people simplify Togashi's health issues to the strain of being a mangaka (which isn't exactly wrong), but by all accounts, he's an artist who would push himself far beyond what's reasonable. I think past a certain point in Hunter x Hunter, he's calmed down from that.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the OTHER major reason why Togashi ended YYH so abruptly. In the same doujin you cited, he also talked about his deep perfectionism and imposter syndrome impacting his drive to create. Togashi was really pushing himself too hard by the end and needed to quit.
