It's also just incredibly hard to keep small lies secret, let alone ones involving hundreds or thousands of people. Clandestine operations are secretive for a reason and much smaller and simpler actions get out regularly. Burying an operation of that magnitude would be an impossible task.

We have lasers that we placed that can be bounced off. We just had India photograph the original NASA landers. We've got ore brought back, tons of evidence of missions. And importantly, if it had been faked, cold war espionage would have revealed it because it would have been incredible propaganda.
