If you have to dial the whole number enough times, you remember it. For a long time you didn't need to dial the area code if you lived in the same area as well, so it was shorter. My grandmother used to use words to help, like Ortega-859, you would only need the first 4 letters made into numbers.

Ugh, needing money from the US does kind of make that important, but it IS loathsome. Maybe another country will offer aid.
