“We analyzed the DNA sequence of the protein in slow loris venom, discovering that it's virtually identical to the allergenic protein on cats."

* CATS ARE 'VENOMOUS' to a subset of humans, 15-20% of the human population. *

Let's talk about cat allergen, Felis domesticus protein 1 (Fel d 1)
Slow lorises are named from Dutch 'loeris' which means "clown". The 'slow' refers to a defensive strategy: slow movements make them hard to see & they freeze in place when threatened.

They do have one trick 'up their sleeve' so to speak: they're venomous mammals, but the poison is in the armpits!

Somehow I hadn’t seen this before. Loads of useful info. And just like that, I just spent a chunk of my Friday evening absorbed by it. Great use I would say! 🤓
Was catching up with friend and talking about model selection and covariance structures (as you do). We ended up turning to @bbolker.bsky.social's fantastically useful FAQ document for mixed models here: bbolker.github.io/mixedmodels-.... If you use #Rstats and mixed models, that FAQ is your friend!

I've just realized that I've been here for a year and a half and have barely shared any of the #Manitoba tourism posters I've done. I started making them as a personal project a few years ago and add a couple more every year when I have the time.

Here is a thread!! #art #landscape #CANartist

Remember that type 1 and type 2 errors go the same order as the boy who cried wolf.
Type 1 - villagers believed there was a wolf (effect) when there wasn't.
Type 2 - villagers didn't believe there was a wolf (effect) when there was.

Killer kitties: a reminder that cats play a major role in wiping out wildlife. How?

By killing literally *billions* of native animals every year, driving numerous extinctions. 🌍

Cats are NOT 'part of nature'. If you must have one, keep it indoors.

The strain on scientific publishing: we set out to characterise the remarkable growth of the scientific literature in the last few years, in spite of declining growth in total scientists. What is going on?

💡 Tip: You can set your website as your username on Bluesky!

This is one form of self-verification, and we especially encourage official organizations and brands to do this! Examples include @npr.org @react.dev @duolingobrasil.com.br.

Here's our guide for how to do this:

One part of our upgraded infrastructure may affect your profile.

If you see your handle now says “Invalid handle,” please reverify it by navigating to Settings > Change my handle > Type in your current handle > Verify DNS Record > Update.

(Basically, update to the same handle.)
