Public health in jeopardy during govt shutdown, COVID wastewater levels decrease, communities stand up to ICE, and take action with our new flier.

Cuts to spending on domestic programs including healthcare have led to significantly increased premiums in both the private and public marketplaces. Insurance premiums only make up part of the story, with much of the increase in premiums being driven by expiring tax credits for those accessing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces. Health premiums for some Americans will rise as much as 70% for 2026 without an extension of the tax credit structure. For the 24 million Americans who do not get their insurance through an employer or Medicare/Medicaid, out-of-pocket premiums are projected to double on average without a tax credit extension, meaning many will see an even greater increase." Header: "Long COVID" Body text: "A recently published systematic review and meta-analysis of 144 scientific studies, 17 of which included data on COVID found that COVID infections raise the risk of heart attack and stroke by 3 times in the 14 weeks following the initial infection. Published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the study found that the increased risk was maintained for at least a year after the infection. Importantly, the study found that other viral illnesses, including the flu, also increased the risk of cardiovascular disease. Among those reinfected between January 2022 and October 2023, the risk of a Long COVID diagnosis doubled compared to those with a single infection. Even in the absence of an official Long COVID diagnosis, reinfection was associated with a higher risk for related conditions such as POTS, myocarditis, chest pain, fatigue, dizziness, and more. The study demonstrated how Long COVID can manifest differently in the pediatric population, often with more nonspecific symptoms such as mood changes, fatigue, and abdominal pain. This week, we will discuss the chaos around COVID vaccine access, COVID levels, and review action steps.

Public health is under physical and political attacks, COVID wastewater levels are high– save COVID vaccines and remove RFK Jr., and keep healthcare safe from COVID infections.

Wastewater COVID levels and COVID ER visits have risen slightly, CDC’s variant surveillance has paused, and take action to reinstate OSHA and ensure COVID is reported in healthcare settings.
