1/10 Genome maintenance by telomerase is a fundamental process in nearly all eukaryotes. But where does it come from?

Today, we report the discovery of telomerase homologs in a family of antiviral RTs, revealing an unexpected evolutionary origin in bacteria.

Antiviral reverse transcriptases reveal the evolutionary origin of telomerase
Defense-associated reverse transcriptases (DRTs) employ diverse and distinctive mechanisms of cDNA synthesis to protect bacteria against viral infection. However, much of DRT family diversity remains ...

We just posted a new preprint where we found retrons in bacteria out in the real world, in dirt and water. We describe the first retrons in a handful of new species, show how they defend against phages, and use them to edit genomes. Read about it here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

For example, Crick speculated that DNA → protein might be possible but seemed unlikely.

He also suggested that RNA → DNA could be feasible, even though there was no evidence for it yet. This turned out to be prophetic.

Most people misunderstand the Central Dogma.

In school, perhaps you were taught it as “DNA → RNA → protein.” But that’s a massive oversimplification.

Francis Crick’s real "Central Dogma" was about what *cannot* happen in a cell. Let’s break it down. 🧵
