Norwegian woman who likes FFXIV and food. Trying out bsky for fun.

I mostly want to log my experiences doing my casual cooking projects here. Still not sure how to present them, but as I do it for fun, I will take it a bit slow as I find a rhytm. Will probably write more of other things as I get comfortable.
The honey muffins from the FFXIV cookbook by @pixelatedvicka.bsky.social are the best muffins I've baked; I love an excuse to bake them! I had to change some things, like substitute 50% of the baking powder with natrium because the Norwegian is weaker than American, but it is part of the fun!

While observing Easter, my mother found liqueurs that she made some years back, one with rosebay willowherb, one with chaga and one with St. John's wort. Since the family in general avoid alcohol nowadays, but I drink with friends every other month, she gave them to me!

A book we got when children titled "Mat fra hele verden - Italia" by unknown authors has a page for leg of lamb with rosemary and marsala. I had never tried marsala with lamb before, but as you see, it was quite successfull (forgot to take picture early), even though we had to scrap some rare stuff.

This is my third time making this chocolate cake from "Potetkokeboka" by Ina-Janine Johnsen, but not only did I take it out too early, but it tasted unusual. I used a different chocolate this time, not Norwegian, so it might just be that I'm not used to the taste. Learning experience, I guess.

Finally, I got around to get reindeer steak and make the sauce as the book intended! It was fine, I'm just not used to all the sweetness, with sugar as part of the seasoning. Still, it worked better with steak than meatballs! Makes sense, since I think reindeer works well with tart berries.

My friend and I are the few in our group that still drink semi-regularly, so we have fun making drinks when we do. This is Sparkale from the Horizon Cookbook by @pixelatedvicka.bsky.social. Not a big fan of ginger, but we loved the mead combination! So fun to try the mead 😀

To celebrate my area finalen seeing the sun again after months, I made what we call Berlinerboller, or, Berlin bun. First time I fry dough, temperature was too low so oil got into it, but colleagues liked it enough. Planned to experiment more with flying, but Mom accidentally threw the oil away. 😆

Me, reading an English cookbook: Ooh, that looks like an interesting recipe, I think I may-
The recipe: *needs buttermilk*
Me, turning the next page: sigh, and we're moving on.

Apperently I can substitute with kefir or cultured milk, I just find it fun to compare ingredients between countries.

My mother and I were reading through Bringebærlandet (Land of Rasberries) by multiple authors, and she really wanted to try the sauce for reindeer meat. However, we half-assed it too much, substituting a lot that in the end, did not work together as intended. I hope to try again properly soon.

Lol, I barely got to day four before I forgot during a visit to my niece, who served spagetti with meatballs and I was eating when I realized what I was doing. She was just so cute making dinner, though. Back at the start, I guess.
I found this book in the store, and since my sister is flexitarian and I know I want to expand my food palette, I got this book ("A Meatfree Month") by Laila Madsö. I am supposed to start this month, but I might have to delay somw months. I will try as much as I can for now!

This must have been from fall 2023, I had a lot of chantarelles from the year before, so to clear space for the new harvest, I made "Mushroom, Celeri and Garlic Soup" from The soup bible, consulted by Debra Mayhew. I remember it being good, but I am really bad at puréeing soups, I must practice.

There are a lot of ivy in my area, so when I found the recipe to make pasta out of it in "Fra naturens spiskammer" ("From Nature's Pantry") by Anne Mæhlum, I knew I had to try. It was fine, a little too soft, not sure how to make it firmer, but it worked fine with salmon, sour cream and pesto!

My third arrabiata is from "Sølvskjeen", meaning "the silver spoon", which my grandmother gave me for Christmas when I studied Italian in high school. I did not like this one, sometimes I think I should try it again to see if it was a fluke. Lost the picture of my attempt, and the cookbook had none.

My second arrabiata recipe, from Bent Stiansen's "Alene hjemme", p. 98. My favourite arrabiata yet, I have done it several times, mostly because for one person it needs half the box of tomatoes, but I might prepare better and find other recipes that need half a box for next day.

Once, I had arrabbiata week. I made Charizard: Spicy Arrabbiata first, p.17 from "My Pokemon Cookbook" by @pixelatedvicka.bsky.social. "Paprika" in Norwegian is bell pepper, not the powder, so when I did this the first time, I perplexedly minced bell pepper and sorted it with a table spoon, hahah.

My favourite cookbook, given to me by my grandmother. It is written by renowned Bent Stiansen and its title means "Home Alone"/"Alone at Home", meant for those that mostly make food for oneself or for two. Grandmother LOVED Bent Stiansen, and we once celebrated her birthday at his restaurant.

My grandmother and I loved to cook together, and she loved cookbooks. After her passing, I received most of them, which stand together with my own. They are one of many ways I remember her in my daily life. I try to cook at least recipe a week and here I will sometimes write how that went.
