I don't see it as a problem either. I just doubt that it is broadly accepted as a feature of a modern welfare state. Benefits are generally treated as a problem by politicians and the news media, and I would argue that that needs to change.

Will we ever reach a point then when all are paid enough to support a family if they have one through wages alone? If not, then I think that conversation needs to be had more broadly as many view in-work benefits as a failure of the economy (or benefit recipients) rather than as a permanent feature.

Isn't there a difference between subsidising higher profits by supporting lower wages and subsidising a useful job that wouldn't exist otherwise? For low pay, wouldn't a highet NMW solve the problem? For subsidising useful jobs, I am thinking of some SMEs in particular.

This is a classic response from the Labour establishment. There's always a reason we can't sort out what's wrong with the Labour Party, so we never do it and they just stay in charge.

Who on Earth gave confidential reports to Andrew?

The current Labour leadership aren't capable of doing this and have no interest in doing it.

What's more, they will now be on buses and trains with "our women and children" and will be subject to abuse and worse for doing so.

The irony is that they had a leader who understood all that and stood full square against it. So they buried him.

I haven't got any of them, but I did have a Topical Times annual (may still have it) so I'm pretty sure it's in there too.

Thanks.

They got their money's worth out of the balls in those days.

He was named in the Topical Times annual referred to by @hunphreysdad.bsky.social in this thread, but I'm afraid I can't remember his surname. Did it begin with "H"?

... or a camera.

Perhaps @jonathanfreedland.bsky.social could repost his own protests about the appointment of Mandelson at the time for the benefit of those of us who missed them.
