Before ATMs were widespread, to get money you’d have to physically go into your bank and write a cheque payable to ‘CASH’, for enough until you need to do it again.

Am about 10 years into a weighty biography of a (the most) prominent figure from WW2 by historian Ian Kershaw. It’s on my phone and tend to only read it when I fly. I’m about halfway through now and it really is excellent.
