In 1940, the successor to the Dewoitine D.520 was put under development, the SE.580. Its development took place in secret during the Occupation of France. At the end of 1944, two prototypes of the SE.580 were ordered.
The main feature of the SE.580 was a large air intake just behind the cockpit.
