Gathering information on past rents is challenging and there is no formal registry of rent prices. Instead, a volunteer-run project (@myoldapartment.bsky.social) aimed to bridge this information gap.

And in order to file an application to determine whether the rent being paid for a unit is compliant with the regulations, tenants need:
• To actively be living in the unit they are filing the application for
• To have evidence to support what they are currently paying in rent

While vacancy control is intended to prevent large rent increases year-over-year as well as when units turnover, we have learned that the effectiveness of PEI's vacancy control is mostly reliant on tenant-driven complaints to the rental office.

What we know about evictions – especially the types tracked by the PEI Eviction Project – is that the act of displacement can create distance (weeks, months) between evicted tenants & tenants who later live in a unit.

These are regulations around how often + how much rent can be increased. Increases are tied to the unit itself, not the tenant occupying it.

• Evictions and forced displacements can have severe consequences for individuals and communities who experience them.
