Professor of Middle East politics, terrorism, religion and politics. Guitar/mandolin. D&D and Star Trek. Wouldn't trust any group that would have me as a member.
I'm trying to start a tradition of my Department dressing up for Halloween. We'll see how it goes

Not sure if there's a miniatures community on here, but I've been playing Star Wars Legion, which involves building and painting the minis. I'm pretty proud of this one.

Two years ago I attended the SSSR conference in Salt Lake City. This was the filming site of one of my favorite movies, Carnival of Souls, so I went to see a few of the locations that still exist. That was my brief mustache period.

a student brought in some apples for me today (it's apple picking season in VT). I feel like a real teacher.

does anyone ever pick option #5? Seems unnecessarily Simon Cowell-ish

me: can the left focus on the real issue (abuse of power) instead of mocking people worried about crime?

Would you rather make a marginal contribution to a significant area of research or a significant contribution to a marginal area of research?

Vance can try his ordo amoris explanation--which he doesn't really understand--but that doesn't let you harm people. Trump supporters can claim "neighbor" only refers to American citizens, but that's obviously wrong. And they may want to remember this passage from Matthew 25 as well.

Also, I love that this "poll" only included "Yes" as a response

It worries me that progressives don't seem to get the difference between a lefty candidate winning in a primary and a lefty candidate winning in the general, especially outside of a major city.

Michael Hobbes' combo of smug and ill-informed is such a perfect examples of what's wrong w/ progressives, and why this site is often unbearable. Sure, some argue closures didn't work, but the more common claim is that people need to admit the trade-offs

this is just a tiresome argument, and disingenuous to conflate Chait and Weiss. There are free speech issues from the left on campus--people called free speech a right-wing value up until a few months ago. Just bc there are also threats from the right doesn't mean the former concerns are wrong.

It's a little hard to take conservatives' dedication to religious freedom seriously with details like this

My Uni is having us take the survey and I'm just not sure what they expect to find. Do they really think Profs will say it's "not important" to be available to students or provide accurate information? #academicsky

Highlight of my trip to @isanet.bsky.social in Chicago.

Jk, it was actually a very good conference. Presented new research, heard interesting work on religious nationalism, talked w/ promising grad students, met w/ my CFR Education Ambassadors Program. Not enthused about next year in Columbus...

My book is out on the @cornellupress.bsky.social booth at @isanet.bsky.social. Grab a copy before it's gone!

Another example of why we shouldn't trust AI for research unless we really know the source--I search for information on UN mediation after the Six Day War and this is what I got (Bernadotte was UN mediator after the 1948 war)

One benefit of Trumps attacks on Bishop Budde over her call for mercy-its forcing conservative religious freedom advocates to reveal who they are. Here's the head of a religious freedom org arguing the attacks are fine bc she was rude
