I can definitely relate! I'm not sure I will live long enough to knit all my stash at this point. My daughter calls it the Strategic Wool Reserve.

Yes you can combine crochet and knit in one piece. You can pick up and crochet from the bound off stitches of knitting, or from the side of knitting. The same way you can pick up stitches to knit from the top or side of crochet. Let your imagination go free.

The flap version does not include sewing. What it does include is picking up stitches along the sides of the flap. That means pulling a stitch up sideways through another stitch. It's easier to understand when the sock is in your hand. Love Crafts offers a number of free patterns on their site.
