The Senate Banking Committee did a good thing yesterday by passing The ROAD to Housing Act. It has some good pieces and makes some positive improvements. Energizing all of us to keep up the good work to make housing affordable for all.

It’s important to look at any funding bill in its entirety. Funding homeless services is good but not fully paying for the programs that end homelessness like public housing & rental assistance is very short sided & not solutions oriented. This is why the public is frustrated.

Several House Republicans held their noses and voted yes on their version of OBBB. They hoped the Senate would make it better. NOPE!

Here is a sampling of ways Senate Republicans actually made it worse.

It only takes a little math to dissect what the One Big Beautiful Bill is all about - Securing tax cuts for wealthy people on the backs of people who will have their health coverage and food assistance taken away.

Next week Congress comes back to DC and attention shifts to the Senate on the budget reconciliation bill.

Keep these handy as quick reminders of what is at stake.

And remember all of this harm is in service of giving wealthy people and corporations tax cuts.

The President left out "for the wealthy' when talking about the tax cuts he supports. His proposals, which are included in the House budget resolution, cut taxes for the top 1% and pay for it by cutting food assistance and Medicaid. #CBPPJointAddress

So why does the House Republican budget plan include the possibility of $230 billion in food benefit cuts?

Proposals like this are unpopular and misguided. Especially when they are in service of tax cuts for the wealthy.

Definitely NOT what the doctor ordered.

The GOP list includes cuts to TANF – our nation’s only program providing basic cash aid & work supports to very low-income families.

Why do we talk about racial inequality? Because a rising tide doesn’t lift a boat with rocks in it. We need policy oriented toward removing the rocks.

See this new @CenterOnBudget report on income inequality.

And let us not overlook the fact that these proposals would also entrench the poor outcomes people of color, especially people of color with low incomes, disproportionately face. This would be even worse for many immigrants of color.

The bill matches the Administration’s request for the Homeless Assistance Grants program, though more funding is likely needed to prevent a reduction in assistance, and certainly to support the increased number of people experiencing homelessness across the country.
June 27, 2024 at 9:45 PM
Already rental assistance only reaches 1 in 4 households in need due to inadequate funding, and there are long waiting lists for vouchers and an estimated $90 billion backlog of capital repairs in public housing.

Rental assistance helps renters struggling to afford housing but it is also the solution to homelessness. Over 600,000 people were unhoused on a given night in January 2023. Congress needs to increase funding! We need universally available help. #CBPPSOTU
