Learning about it from this post, this feels like a double whammy.

The books have already been vacuumed into every AI tool, and now the search index is going to be used to remove access to papers/books by actual students and researchers.

Nothing about what you said is specific to WebP, and it was never meant *only* for webdev

You may be able to make that argument for something like FUIF/JPEGXL with the progressive levels of decoding, but WebP isn't doing anything web-specific

This feels a lot more like an issue with the software people use and less with the format itself, since you could apply the logic to any newish format

can confirm it is the right decision, consistent access to large amounts of files is amazing
