Wealth is power, so the poor have no ability to resist this sort of structural fuckery. And immiseration is *efficient*: it is vastly easier to own a populace that is too poor to survive than it is to buy folks who have enough, even if just barely.

We do though: in many trailer parks, folks own the structure - which is cheap, relative to other construction - but rent/lease the plot of land it rests on. Theoretically, it's movable. In practice, often not so much. Recently, VC firms glommed on to this detail, and began buying parks...

Yeah, I think that's the crux. There's almost always a sense of difference, and it's often resentful. But the notion of national authenticity being rural is something I've only seen in England and the US. Probably exists elsewhere, I suppose, but I haven't encountered it.
