Back in Issue #5 of the newsletter I mentioned a game that "lasts as a decent mug of tea". It was "Behind the Frame", a simple, cosy puzzle game with a delightful art style. It was a free title on the Epic store that I'm not sure I would have tried otherwise... and would have missed out.

"What are you, some kind of sociopath?" - is what I was asked upon a friend seeing I keep my numpad on the left. Have you ever been called out on any of your ways of using your computer? :D

When the world feels like it sucks, think how spoiled for choice are we when making games these days? You can CHOOSE, to do pixel art. You can CHOOSE the range of your pixel art palette. 16-bit era artists never opted into it, that was just the amount of pixels, and colours they had to work with!

It astonishes me, people talking about how Team Cherry should have given everyone a heads up about releasing their game. As if Ford should have warned carriage makers, Apple should have warned Samsung in 2007, Edison should have warned candlemakers... I'm sorry what?

🤔 It's been almost 20 years since Jenova Chen's master's thesis - Flow. The game was basically Snake-meets-dynamic-difficulty, but what's interesting is how few games utilize this approach to make games neither frustratingly simple nor overwhelming chaos today.

Y'know... games with HDR spectacle, thrashing music, rumbling the controls are great. But there’s beauty in restraint too. When developers strip back UI, visuals & sound to essentials, the emotional charge hits differently.
