I'm in a German supermarket for the first time in a while, but will always struggle to get my head around the juxtaposition of overt tobacco advertising on the one hand, and cigarettes openly on sale with vivid health warnings on the other

This is great from @adamtranter.bsky.social on the need to ensure we put pedestrians at the centre of any shift towards autonomous vehicles. Particularly this bit

It's always a bit weird watching football in an athletics stadium, but there's nowt like lower league football on a bank holiday weekend.

Gateshead vs York - two promotion/playoff contenders near the top of what should really be called England's Division 5

Two plus points of my hotel here having arrived in Birmingham:

- it's located just by the Black Sabbath Bridge, which I didn't even know existed
- the staff offer everyone a free drinks voucher in exchange for every day you don't ask them to clean your room. Great idea to incentivise this

En route to Birmingham for the 75th annual conference of the @polstudiesassoc.bsky.social.

I'll be presenting a paper in a @psalocalpol.bsky.social panel, based on Bethany Rex's fieldwork into how municipal museum managers negotiate austerity and pressure to generate income to continue operating.

New statue unveiled in Nottingham's Green Heart to highlight the historical links between slavery and the region's cotton mills.

Lovely photo of the two models in front of it

Spammers exploiting Musk's attempted closure of USAid with a phishing email.

Didn't have that one on my bingo card last year

German election posters are fascinating and they just don't exist in the UK. No space for explaining policies in detail of course, but most set out what parties plan or want to do, rather than slag off opponents.

It's not scientific, but I suspect the need for coalitions contributes towards this

Coming to the end of an amazing family holiday travelling around Switzerland by train.

Swiss trains have been just as punctual as expected, though perhaps an under-reported bonus is that they are all electric, so waiting on station platforms is a much nicer, cleaner, experience than in the UK

Nearly half (49%) of local authority waste is England now gets incinerated. And that's likely to increase.

I suspect there is a correlation between councils that have been hit by austerity and the location of new incinerators. Would be an interesting study...

English councils can (and nearly always do) use prudential borrowing for capital projects, and pay it back over years or decades. So there is no need to save up. In your example, the unit cost of each development would be the same.

Other European countries have no such problems with smaller units

Really quite exciting to see that the railway line in South-East Northumberland will re-open later this month.

Not sure the campaign group has been going quite this long though!

Your annual reminder that Scotland's road gritting service is world-beating when it comes to naming the machines and communicating with the public 👇

The top response to a recent Facebook post by my local authority on this topic was: "Please can you name the gritters like they do in Scotland?"
