A really fun day at Risley Moss with our @livunigeog.bsky.social MSc students. Peat coring, pool biogeochemistry, and vegetation ID. Loads of enthusiasm from the students.

Interested in peatlands and biogeochemistry? Like fieldwork? Then come and do a PhD at @livunigeog.bsky.social
supervised by me, @rchiverrell.bsky.social, Jenny Williamson (@ukceh.bsky.social eh.bsky.social) + Dewi Davies (@nationaltrust.org.uk ltrust.org.uk) www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Somehow managed to dodge the showers on Binsey in the northern Lake District today

A very pleasant few hours on Sale Fell in the Lake District today.

Our session on aquatic ecosystems and greenhouse gases will be running again at #EGU26. Why not get ahead of the post-Christmas last-minute rush and submit an abstract unfashionably early?

It's Thursday which can only mean one thing: lab day for our 1st year @livunigeog.bsky.social undergrads. My students are out on campus @liverpooluni.bsky.social enjoying the sunshine and measuring CO2 emissions from grasses and soils.

Well this is cool. A new peat paper with a possible mechanism for Will-o’-the-wisps in @pnas.org

Migneint blanket bog with @laurabaugh94.bsky.social
today, installing collars for our @water4all-eu.bsky.social
project ECOWADE, + doing some pool GHG measurements for Laura's PhD.

Also enjoyed visiting a new restoration site where work has just started to reprofile an eroded area of peat hags.

Got some people together for a whisky tasting and we all brought a few bottles. Ardbeg Uigeadail was unanimously voted the best.

Looking for a PhD in aquatic carbon/GHG cycling? Take a look at this fantastic opportunity. Led by @aquaticcarbon.bsky.social and with Amy Pickard, Jens-Arne Subke and me. Field + lab components, and lots of exciting science.

Some excellent marginalia at Norton Priory today. Beware the giant snails!

A car full of greenhouse gas sampling collars, made by the School of Engineering workshops at @liverpooluni.bsky.social. These will go into a North Wales blanket bog for our @water4all-eu.bsky.social project ECOWADE.

A successful day coring two sites on the Migneint blanket bog in North Wales with @laurabaugh94.bsky.social, @rchiverrell.bsky.social & undergrad Teleri. We'll analyse the cores for geochemistry (via XRF) and organic matter composition (infrared spectrometry).

New paper accepted in FEMS Microbiology Ecology:

"Winter microbial community structure and methane-cycling potential in constructed agricultural wetlands across regions and microhabitat"

For this, we sampled ~40 wetlands in two different regions of Sweden.

A few hours alone, stravaiging the Wiltshire Downs around Avebury, and with a visit to Silbury Hill (a prehistoric artificial mound). A good afternoon for cloudscapes.

Question for Picarro GasScouter users: has anyone seen this before? Our field tech has been having an issue where the analyser works normally for a little while, then goes weird and gives an error message.

An afternoon wander along the Ridgeway to Wayland's Smithy Long Barrow. Even on a sunny day I find this place has a powerful and eerie atmosphere. Then on to Uffington White Horse, which was carved ~3000 years ago.

A visit to @nationaltrust.org.uk Croome. The landscape is parched, the ground is cracking. But look: The River (actually an artificial waterway) is green and alive. Wetlands for the win!

Escaped to the Lake District today. Glorious.

I don't find this justification convincing. One for the peatland community. www.mdpi.com/2073-4441/17...

Last day in Uppsala. Scorching. Cycled down to Ekoln for a swim only to find a large algal bloom. Oh well, no swimming today.
August 14, 2025 at 7:27 PM
Cycling through the Swedish agricultural landscape today. Found a ditch. It illustrates nicely how ditches can be refuges for biodiversity, including wetland species, when wetlands and wildness have vanished from the surrounding fields.
August 13, 2025 at 5:57 PM
Back at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences today for more wetland meetings. Stopped by my favourite pond on campus. I have a really cool paper to write on this (CH4 ebullition, C burial, water chem, enzymes) when I find time, and we're now using it for citizen science.
