It actually restored some faith in common sense for me! The group post has 80 comments almost entirely against their view with a range of good opinions from actively pro-cycling to just “can’t see the problem”. Very refreshing!

And luckily it already has been for decades! The signs were officially removed so Peak District seem quite intent on the impending bridleway classification thankfully.

That’s nearly a week after posting it on a group with 3.5k members. I’m tempted to make a counter petition but I think they’ve embarrassed themselves enough.

Definitely the source of the fake no cycling signs is definitely not within that list of 13 names.

Noticed there’s a newish electronic warning sign as you join from the A6, probably for this purpose? 🌊🛶 (Not confirmed if it uses AI 😅)

Does that 96 still see GM include Glossop and Hadfield, but not New Mills Central, which is closer to town and yet also left totally out of the Bee Network Rail plans?

(New Mills Newtown will be on the Bee Network Buxton line, so I assume benefitting then from new fares, just to confuse further!)

As I predicted, the gate at Turf Lea Farm was locked again as of Wednesday leaving just the squeeze gap. This is the only way off the canal towpath at the closure point.

There is still no indication of the closure further back in either direction to warn people and allow them to divert off sooner.

The work to the canal is clearly necessary and Canal & River Trust wouldn’t so solidly block the towpath unless they needed to.

But in the publicity of such a major inconvenience and provision of a diversion route that is in any way suitable, the councils and CRT have massively failed us.

Today I pushed my bike on the long footpath diversion ‘provided’ by Cheshire East and Stockport councils.

A path I know well and in poor condition for walking at the best of times. Muddy slopes, slippy roots, narrow. Gates, a high stile. Nothing has been done to improve it in advance of this work.

The Peak Forest Canal closure at Turf Lea/Strines just now.

No warning whatsoever from further back until you are right at the bridge at either end. From the Disley side that’s a very lengthy turn back if cycling, having to use part of the A6 and some very hilly rat runs.

Lyme at nightfall was quite magical. Sweating up from the west gate in too many layers with too heavy a bag over slippy leaves. The distant lights of the city. A big moon and darkness falling over the moors.

No doubt more nourishing for the soul than Marple Ridge and Jackson’s Edge at rush hour.

What on earth! Instead of, say, an actual speed camera issuing penalties?

Travelled in a car along there yesterday. Angry overtake from an Audi, people speeding round the bends, double pavement parking but didn’t notice any AI magic yet.

Oh, what/where are those signs?
November 3, 2025 at 12:56 PM
Assuming you don’t want to ride the B6101 (you don’t), the nearest cycleable diversion route is up onto the Marple Ridge road followed by climbing over Jackson’s Edge Road to Disley. (Lovely with a heavy bag!) I will post more about this on the website soon, hoping CRT give me a definite end date.
