Send Help doesn’t need help. Survivor meets Horrible Bosses; the comedy thriller takes some time to fully take off. But it’s worth it. * * * Starring Rachel McAdams, and Dylan O’Brien as her annoying boss, the film is a laugh-out-loud, rousing manifesto for downtrodden workers, a bloodcurdling PSA for all scumbag bosses, and a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse between both actors. The story? Doesn’t make much sense. The character arcs? Out of nowhere. But Raimi does his magic with this not-that-credible script. Wielding his trademark flair and macabre sense of humor, he elevates the film to an entertaining — and occasionally bloody and disgusting — trip to a remote tropical paradise. Send Help is a gross and glorious, good time. You start by feeling bad for the employee, and you end up feeling bad for the horrible boss. This film is Sam Raimi back to having fun. The film uses stereotypes for comedy, but it doesn’t use that as an excuse to not give the characters some depth. I never thought I’d say that, but I’d love to see more films under this genre of twisted thriller comedy. Give me more! Send Help – Official Trailer ##### Should you watch it? A very Sam Raimi film. Marvel’s Wonder Man is a niche MCU entry that prioritizes character, performance, and Hollywood satire over superhero spectacle. General audiences looking for classic MCU thrills may not connect as easily. * * * Created by ShangChi‘s Destin Daniel Cretton, and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & Ben Kingsley, Wonder Man is a self-contained series about an actor trying his best to land the role of his life. The twist? He struggles with anxiety around hiding his superpowers, because Hollywood won’t allow a super-powered actor. To be honest, I like the show. Not my kind of story, but it’s very well done. And aside from the random script reference to superpowers, you’d be forgiven if you forgot that it’s an MCU show. Cretton did a great job: Great storytelling isn’t complicated. Wonder Man is, in a word, delightful. Not only are the eight episodes only around half an hour long but they also eschew spectacle in favour of storytelling. It’s a radical idea, but you never know, it might catch on. Plus, it definitely helps when your two costars have one of the best chemistries I’ve seen in a while. Give us Trevor Slattery any time. Kingsley is a natural-born showman and channels legendary thespian vibes with every line he delivers, while Abdul-Matten II makes you feel the neuroses rooted in the psyche of his trying-too-hard character, who feels like an imposter. All in all, Wonder Man is funny, poignant and readily comprehensible to non-nerds. The show marks a sharp retreat by Marvel from its previous strategy of pandering exclusively to dyed-in-the-spandex mega-fans. Riff Raff is a cute story full of twists, turns, heartfelt moments, and some old school shock and awe. * * * Starring Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, and others, this film by Dito Montiel is a cute throwback to the late 90s action comedies. While the film had me at Jennifer Coolidge, I have mixed feelings about this film. Montiel tried to cram too much into its runtime with too many characters and didn’t give everyone their full showing. But something is off. Being frank, a big why the film doesn’t click is the cast, full of big names who all appear hungover or exhausted or just not very engaged with their work. Aside from Coolidge and Pullman, most of the cast seemed to be there against their will. Yes, kidnapping is part of the plot, but not in this case. While Montiel hides his cards all the way to the end, this decision added a layer of mystery and complexity to the story. The mystery worked in the film’s favor. As for the complexity? Not so much. Half the cast looked confused for more of the runtime not sure what to say or do. Miraculously, despite the complexity it’s still a fun trip without growing overwhelming, while its sprinkling of Hollywood royalty adds a touch of class. All in all, it feels almost criminal that this over-the-top dysfunctional comedy is so genuinely entertaining. Even when it’s cringe, it’s kind of funny. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is essentially an overdrawn mess that tries to link the previous movies in the most unrealistic way. * * * Tom Cruise & Hayley Atwell are back for what’s clearly pitched as the “final” movie in the franchise starring cruise. Sadly, nothing makes sense here. With a runtime of almost 3 hours, we spend half the time watching Cruise run from one set to the other, and then, one of the most underwhelming plane stunts. And aside from all the bells and whistles, the plot is more forced, and out of place, than a Texan in West Hollywood. This “final” mission plucks the weirdest incidents from the previous movies and forces them to be “easter eggs” for the plot of this one. When it comes to this final entry in the series, it’s unfortunate to have to say that the balance has shifted in the wrong direction, with exposition dominating the runtime, and action subsequently taking a backseat to it. I never liked Cruise, but I certainly enjoyed the Mission Impossible movies. They were fun. Turn off your brain and enjoy the action. This is not the case here. I was disappointed by this one. It’s not because it’s a bad film, it’s okay, but because it’s a tangled, overcomplicated experience that forgets what made this series special in the first place. The Roses highlights a battle of the sexes for today with a brilliant satiric screenplay supported by everyone on screen, especially the two lead actors. * * * Starring Olivia Colman & Benedict Cumberbatch, this remake caught me by surprise. While I saw the trailer in theaters, I wasn’t sure I’d be into it. But then, one rainy Saturday afternoon, I fell in love with it. I don’t know why people are giving it a hard time. Yes, this is a remake of a previous movie, who’s also based on a book. I haven’t seen the previous movie, or read the book, and I don’t think it matters. On its own, this is a movie about a normal, human, and realistic love story between two British folks who ran away to California to raise a family, and their life. Yes, The Roses won’t change anybody’s life, but Colman and Cumberbatch stir up enough comedy to make it a worthy diversion. They’re a match made in heaven. Especially Colman. She’s very natural and loveable as the Chef turned mom turned Chef. They both look to be having a ball though they don’t convince as a married couple. Still because of the subject matter we’ll never know if they lack chemistry or they’re simply really good at pretending to have been married for 15 years. While the two lead actors are amazing, no movie works without the good side characters and actors. And this movie has a lot of those. From Andy Samberg to Ncuti Gatwa and Allison Janney. Everything about this movie directed by Jay Roach just effortlessly works. I laughed, I laughed hard, I had fun, I’d definitely watch it again. In fact, I already did. Season Two of Palm Royale is like watching a series of sketch comedy scenes from SNL that aren’t funny, but the actors keep on acting hard to try to get the audience to laugh. * * * How can you top the cast of the first season? You add Patti LuPone. However, with a bigger cast, the writers took on themselves to make the season messier, harder to follow, and a totally campy show. Don’t get me wrong, I love over the top stories and costumes. But I also need a semi-logical storyline to tie everything together. Season two of Apple TV’s Palm Royale has too many storylines stuffed in each episode to make it interesting enough to care, or even coherent. A big example is LuPone’s character. She shows up out of nowhere, takes a whole episode, and some, initially affects nothing, and then disappears till the finale. It honestly felt like a last-minute decision to stuff her into the season in order to replace Carol Burnett as the central figure in any potential future seasons. To be honest, I don’t think the show should have a third season. If you come for the pretty costumes and production design, you’ll be a happy camper, but don’t expect the new season to get any less overstuffed, silly, messy, incoherent, or shallow. While Allison Janney is essentially the central character of the season, and she did amazing, the stories of every single character on this show made absolutely no sense, even for a fantasy world. I keep trying to have some patience with this show, but It’s still too much in love with the visuals, needle drops and word salads it pushes out to viewers, while its characters remain ciphers we find a hard time caring about. ##### Where Can I Watch It? Sing Sing is not just a beautifully made and powerfully acted prison drama. This film is living proof of what can be achieved when we nurture compassion and creativity. * * * Starring Colman Domingo, and a lot of real life previously incarcerated people, this is a film that successfully avoids falling into the typical clichés of prison films, with a story that is moving without ever losing its realism. And it’s all thanks to the performances. In fact, the decision to feature the real prisoners recreating their own stories alongside professional actors — and in a dynamic, gritty, almost gonzo filmmaking style — makes for an especially unique experience. Domingo‘s performance…and those of his fellow inmates are noble in their purpose, dispelling any sentimental tricks to gain sympathy, and embracing the acting talents to which they aspire, their possible redemption. Domingo deserved his Oscar nomination, as well as some of his fellow cast members. The film’s structure, with its occasional theatrical feel and roughly 90-minute runtime, is complemented by editing and lighting that do a great job of making the story engaging and exciting. Yes, art can be transformative, we all knew this. Not immediately, not directly, but it is. And this film shows it in a very sensitive and very, very emotional way. Becoming Karl Lagerfeld is a compelling portrait of self-invention. A push and pull between the external stoic, confident, and forceful Karl Lagerfeld and the privately vulnerable, tender, insecure man that was. * * * Starring Daniel Brühl, Théodore Pellerin, and Arnaud Valois, the show charts, albeit in an inconsistent and weird way, the rise of Lagerfeld from a low-level stylist, to becoming the creative director behind Chanel. While his fashion talents are not the center of the show, and they’re not in question, the show focuses way more on his personal struggles. From prejudice due to his German heritage and ready-to-wear fashions, to his personal preferences and conflict falling for Pellerin’s Jacques. Thing is, I started watching the show expecting a mini biography similar to the recent ones (Dior in The New Look, Disney’s Balenciaga). Sadly, that’s not what we get here. Instead of connected events that chart the personal development and career progression, we get random drop-ins that don’t feel connected at all. While Brühl delivers an extra-ordinary performance, the whole show felt like an underwhelming and disjointed story. From Lagerfeld’s relationship with Yves Saint-Laurent, to why his mother lives with him, to why he’s so afraid to actually have something with Jacques and keeps hurting him instead. We know what’s going on, but the fact that we don’t know his actual motivations and needs by the end of the show makes it all feel very shallow.
