1/7 During the demolition works prior to
the construction in 1908 they uncovered 2 remaining pillars of the old Waterhall. These 2 pillars still exist and are now
standing in het Arentshof which is a little garden open to the public and located between the Gruuthusemuseum and the Groeningemuseum.

Delacenserie and R. Buyck on top of the site were the Waterhall used to stand.

1/5 Due to the decline of commerce in the 17th century that moved to Antwerp the building started to lose its purpose. The
building then served a few other purposes. During the Austrian period they finally decided in 1787 to cover the canal

1/4 Barges with heavier goods like barrels of wine, oil, pickled herring etc… would be unloaded by the (Big Wooden) City crane. You can see both on the map made by Marcus Gerards in 1562.

1/3 The goods were then loaded on smaller barges so they could be transported to the center of Bruges. The Waterhall
was build on top of a canal so the goods could be lifted into its attic to be stored while being sheltered from the weather.

1/2 It used to stand on the eastern side of the central marketplace (95m long, 24m width, 30m high).
Bruges had the Staple right on all the goods that were unloaded from sail ships in the Zwin ports of Sluis and Damme.

Same goes for meat & other food sold in those plastic trays with a plastic peel of cover. If the cover is bulged/puffy the meat is nearly expired.
