I have to find that TV series!! Huge Bix fan here, and I have a collection on vinyl which probably has just about every track recorded with Bix on it. #:')
PS. I'm sure you don't remember the name of that TV series, though...

So you kinda need to ignore the 20's sounding intro, and just listen for Bix's solo on this classic. Bix fans used to wear out the 78's where his solos were, it's told. His solos are timeless, especially ones like this. I interpret this as "I'm coming Virginia, but yet I know that...

Yeah -- anyone who hasn't been steeped in early jazz could easily be surprised at how sophisticated it was by even the mid-30's, and how incredible the soloists were (starting with Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens). I was afraid to post a Beiderbecke track, but you forced my hand, ha!

I think we all need a little bit of this kind of thinking these days! Listen for Teddy Wilson to swing out on piano, and Prez on sax. Lady Day, Teddy Wilson and Prez gave us some of the greatest small group recordings ever: youtu.be/O0UEnIBqypM?...

Whelp, you passed the memory test, ha! I'm going for something now that I know I haven't posted (but it's prolly not for most, even as being some of the most exalted jazz ever recorded)...
So if you like the sun, does it make sense that you live in the UK?? #:')

Does anyone know if Datalabs is back up yet (it seems not, but I'm a newbie to this facility)?

So being involved in music in some way is prolly a good factor in long life. Gonna start playing some of my instruments at home again, soon... #:')

I used to joke that the best way to live a long time was to be born as a black jazz musician. Phil Schaap (RIP), a Grammy winner for his work in documenting early jazz, used to have these 90+ y/o black jazz musicians on his jazz show from Columbia Univ, which is where that theory came from...

I remember a book I had long ago, focusing on all those cool creatures -- diatoms and their ilk. I've never forgotten those little guys, and they seem to get so little attention!

What it used to be, with many of the DJ's that knew the obscure, but still great, records of that era now gone. But you might check it out -- on weekends it's mostly "doo-wop all the time" (but still not what it once was).
December 8, 2025 at 12:10 PM
Yeah, there seems to be some confusion about the spelling! If you like the female persuasion in that genre, there was a woman, "The Doo-wop Queen of the North" (can't remember her name now), who would sometimes join a DJ on WRDV and bring her records featuring those groups. RDV is not quite...
