What is not mentioned in the article is that in Switzerland, the alternative conclusion from this tragedy might well be that we accept this risk if we wish to preserve our local democratic power. But obviously it's not the moment to mention this.

As a result, services on the whole tend to be professional (and efficient) across the country. But on the flip side, it is bureaucratic and God help you if you want something special or something goes wrong.

I love the Swiss preference for local power vs my native Holland's balance in this most of the time (not always I have to admit). In The Netherlands provinces are empty shells and municipalities have fairly limited resources and power.

This article accurately describes what I've observed in my 20+ years in this country. It eloquently shows how you can't maximize both "local power" and "professionalism" (increasing local professionalism will massively increase cost/taxes).
