Blooming today in our garden. It’s San Pedro cactus I believe: Trichocereus pachanois Their flowers tend to last 2-3 days. It contains the psychedelic alkaloid mescaline and has been used for spiritual and healing ceremonies for thousands of years in the Peruvian Andes.

Today in my garden: Crocus sativus, commonly known as saffron crocus. Human cultivation of saffron crocus and the trade and use of saffron have endured for more than 3,500 years and span different cultures, continents, and civilizations.

Remarkable recovery of the Klamath River salmon. Many thanks to the agencies, Tribes, and NGOs who came together to remove dams and monitor the recovery of the Klamath River salmon. And kudos, too, to the indigenous youth who paddled source to sea on the newly freed river

Oh! What a great story and beautiful photos. I felt the same way the first time I saw ghost flowers in a Maine wetland. “I was moved by the existence of such a mysterious living thing”

My daughter told this bear to scat but instead he decided to try to climb in (and break) the kitchen window. There are 3x more bears in tahoe than 30 years ago. Climate change is disrupting bears hibernation. www.capradio.org/news/tahoela...

#plantworshop. Ben Scheres gave a brilliant talk on the challenges of translating “simple” traits discovered in the lab to the field. Ya think it’s easy to fine tune pungency in peppers? 🌶️ 🫑 Think again
