I took the road until it ran out, rashly ignored the carefully positioned bike stands and pushed the bike up the rest of the way. But as you say, I was at least rewarded with a view ... though as the pic below shows, it was a close run thing!

And even if a helmet won't always save you if a car takes you out, that's not the only way you can get hurt on a bike. Three weeks ago I came off on a greasy corner (no-one else involved) and ended up looking like this. I was very glad I'd been wearing a lid, as it could have been much worse
