Watching Remember The Night
A gangbusters first half hour dissolves sadly into sludge when even Preston Sturges can't work out how Stanwyck's shoplifter can marry MacMurray's prosecuting Assistant DA without seeming to profit from her crime under the Hayes Code.Features an excellent cow performance

Watched Campfire Christmas
A total swizz: her parents retire from their summer camp, so they have a reunion and call it Christmas In July so Hallmark can show it at Xmas.Everyone ends up with their teen crushes realising they've wasted 15 years of their lives and thus the crushing futility of life

Watching Ka Whawhai Tonu
Impressive Maori war film that is maybe overstuffed with a coming of age romance too, but gives good trench fighting, magical realism and dappled sunlit forests along with much bloody violence. Imagine a teen Last Of The Mohicans with solid anti-colonial bona-fides

Watching The Art Of Christmas
She's an artist who constantly spills any liquid available over herself and whose art show burns down so she takes a job as an art teacher
He's an ex-hockey player now a teacher, who always has a spare hockey jersey available when she spills drinks on herself
That's it

New Home Office impact assessment finds that cutting skilled and social care visas will cost the UK up to £10 billion with a central estimate of -£5.4 billion.

It would be good if this got even a fraction of the coverage devoted to the endless debate about boats, flags and Turkish barber shops

Watching Holler
Sadly not a musical expansion of the Spice Girls song, but a pretty grim rust belt coming of age film where Jessica Barden plays the daughter of a oxy addict who works in the dodgy scrap industry to pay for life/college. Barden is great but it plays a little Winter's Bone lite

Watching Engaging Father Christmas
Middle film of a trilogy of Xmas romance means all that happens here is he engages her, and with all the drama elsewhere (yawn secret paternity nonsense) that's next to no drama at all

Watched Every Time A Bell Rings
No angels getting their wings here, instead a scavenger hunt Christmas with three adopted(now grown up)girls bonding over their dead Dad's last set of puzzles. There's three of them so one can be non-white and one can be gay and that sorts out diversity for another year

Watched Michael
Dreyer's melodrama between and artist and his muse is important as, while it's never explicit, there is clearly a homosexual attraction at the centre of it. Power issues are negated over a simple tale of jealousy, and while it is groundbreaking, it is also quite boring for stretches

Watching Troll 2
Pretty odd that Troll 2 has more tomb raiding in it than director Roar Uthaug 2018 Tomb Raider film, which becomes an issue when it takes valuable screen time from the Kaiju Trolls. Takes a dumb fun movie and multiplies the dumbness to a near exponential degree

Watching The Cut
Orlando Blooms second good role this year as an Irish boxer dropping weight for a fight. Catriona Balfe is great as his wife/trainer but the film loads him with a trite backstory and Turturro's weight loss specialist doesn't help.Still has compelling mind body decline thrills tho

Its all about ethics in Christmas Toy
Journalism

Watching Boss Level up
Breaking my no Mel Gibson rule, this is a time loop action movie that resets every time our hero(Frank Grillo)dies, and he's got ten assassins after him and the world is about to end.Great opening, but a sludgy middle, until mayhem is finally unleashed.Rare scifi loop explanation

Watching My Sekrit Santa
The prosthetics screans Xmas Mrs Doubtfire, though since the crossdressing as Santa is for a job it is more Tootsie. Single mom gets a Santa job to pay 50% on her kid's snowboard school fees, falls in love with the boss but is Santa.Less problematic than the films it rips off
December 5, 2025 at 10:05 PM
Watching Alice And The Dogcatcher
The fifth of the Walt Disney Alice part animated shorts opens with a jawdropping sequence, the kids in newspaper hoods in a meeting of the KKK (Klik Klak Klub). They just get away with it because their black friend is a member and the film is actually about dogs.
December 5, 2025 at 9:07 PM
Watched The Mission
The beautification of the indigenous parts in this film and their lack of agency sticks out like a sore thumb, and Bob De Niro feels miscast, but it screams worthy middlebrow epic and pulls it off, not least with the Morricone soundtrack classing the joint up

Watching Saigon
Studios still contorting themselves to try and make another Casablanca happen, here with a bizarre tale of a terminally ill flyboy (he doesn't know),his crew and a femme fatale with a case of money in Saigon. There's some good talkie stuff on the plane, but the scenario is just weird

Watching Christmas At The Golden to Dragon
Offbeat Hallmark take on people who go to for a Chinese on Christmas Day (misses out the Jewish subtext that often comes with it).Chinese parents have decided to retire, their kids belatedly realise their working Xmas was great.Contains mild Hallmark parody
December 4, 2025 at 9:08 PM
Watched Dark Age
Aussie crocodile take in Jaws that has pretty ropey effects, but a neat line in detestable characters to get chomped. Has a bit of a wooly Indigenous subplot, the croc is apparently the manifestation of the stored potential of the dreaming, but David Gulapil classes the movie up
