Stripe launched Stablecoin accounts this week in “more than 100 countries”, but there are notable gaps…

You can get a Stripe Stablecoin Financial Account in Vatican City but not in Italy.

Likewise you can get an account in the Isle of Man and Jersey but not in the UK.

What’s the point in these AI accounts?

Two of my favourite American bands are playing in London on exactly the same night… What’s the chances of that?

I can only goto one though sadly 😮‍💨

This is why I love Xmas shopping

My wife is actually in a pub in Turkey watching a football game on TV

Her colleagues are drinking alcohol and she’s drinking tea and sending me this

Did you know that some places in England don’t accept Scottish banknotes?

Even though it’s technically the same currency (GBP) Scotland has different physical bank notes.

Apple Pay was around 1% of Apple’s revenue, which totalled $383bn in their last financial year.

Meta’s revenue was $135bn in 2023. 98% of income came from advertising sales. Meta Pay exists but it doesn’t generate any revenue.

Is Meta Pay a missed opportunity?

An interesting example of a merchant incentivising Pay By Bank...

Tech news website The Information is offering $5 discount if you pay directly from a bank account rather than via card.

Seems like this will be a growing trend, especially given the saving of 2%+ on interchange that can be had here.

I love this Japanese explanation of credit card fees that I found in a METI paper. METI stands for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry - they have remit over payments in Japan.

I can’t read it… But Google translate helped me out!

Just got new terms of service for my Square account in the UK today to reflect their partnership with Plaid.

They’ll use Open Banking to verify bank accounts during the application process.

Square’s onboarding experience was already very fast and seems like it’ll get even better.

Contactless payments have come to Wales. You can travel via train between Cardiff and Newport just by tapping in and then tapping out. Nice to see this 👏

The functionality of Alipay really depends on who is using it and where.

For Chinese residents Alipay is a prepaid wallet that needs to be topped up, but for foreign residents it's a passthrough to their registered card.
March 11, 2024 at 4:14 PM
Tourists who use Alipay when they travel in China cannot then use Alipay back at home so far though...

Apps such as Deliveroo offer Alipay, but when a non-Chinese resident tries to pay, then a message appears making it clear that it's for mainland Chinese users only.

As well as Alipay, WeChat Pay is also very popular in China.

Most businesses accept both.

But some large merchants only accept one or the other, for instance JD.com doesn't accept Alipay - see lack of Alipay logo on their homepage (right side).

In China, the mobile wallets Alipay and WeChat Pay are used everywhere. Often cards are not accepted for payment.

Cash legally must be accepted everywhere - but businesses prefer the mobile payment methods.

Are mobile wallets a form of soft power - firstly, what is soft power? It's culture, business, and trade.

As opposed to hard power - war and economic sanctions.

Here's the latest soft power rankings.

Always interesting to see the level of crypto interest in Turkey - this was today in Istanbul. In such a high inflation economy assets priced in USD will always be welcome. There’s many gold exchange shops too for the same reason.
